Privacy Notice

Vatt Labs LLC  ·  Version 1.0  ·  Last updated 13 September 2026

In short

  • Flint is a desktop application. It edits your media on your own computer.
  • It connects to the internet to license itself, to check whether a newer version exists, and for optional components and features you choose to use.
  • Your projects, your footage and your file paths never leave your computer.
  • Crash reports are off until you turn them on, and transcription runs on your own machine.
  • There is no analytics or usage tracking in Flint. We do not sell personal data.

This notice explains what information is processed in connection with the Flint application, this website and our related services, and why. It describes what the current release of Flint actually does, not the widest thing we are permitted to do. It supplements Article 10 of the License Agreement — shown in the installer, included with every download and readable under Settings › Legal — and where the two differ on the handling of personal data, this notice governs.

If a future release collects something this notice does not describe, this notice will be updated before that release ships.

1. Who we are

Vatt Labs LLC, a company organized in Florida, United States, is responsible for the processing described here and is the data controller where that concept applies. You can reach us about anything in this notice at [email protected], which is also the address the License Agreement names for notices and for requests about personal data.

This notice covers the Flint desktop application, the pages under vattlabs.com relating to it, and the services we operate in connection with them.

2. What Flint sends, and when

Flint edits your media on your own computer. It makes four kinds of outbound connection, listed here in full.

  • Update check. On startup, Flint asks our servers whether a newer version exists. The request carries no license key, no identifier and nothing about you or your work. It can be turned off in Settings › Updates. As with any web request, our host records the IP address it came from.
  • License activation and verification. When you enter a license key, it is checked with Polar, the platform that sells Flint. This sends the key itself, and a short code derived from your computer's hardware so that a license can be tied to the machines it is used on. That code is a one-way hash: it is not a serial number, an address or anything that can be turned back into a description of your computer. Once activated, Flint re-checks at most once a week. If the check cannot be made, nothing happens — Flint keeps working offline.
  • Crash reports — only if you turn them on. This is off by default and nothing is sent until you choose it. See section 3.
  • Optional downloads. If you use automatic captions, Flint downloads a speech-recognition model once. That is a download; it sends nothing about you. The transcription itself then runs entirely on your computer — your audio is never uploaded.

If you buy a license, Polar processes your name, email address and payment details as the seller of record. We receive the record of the purchase. We never see your card details.

If you write to us for support, we have whatever you put in the message and anything you choose to attach.

3. Crash reports

If Flint stops unexpectedly, it writes a report to your own computer. That report is not sent anywhere unless you ask for it to be. The first time it happens, Flint tells you it crashed and offers to send it; if you decline, or ignore it, nothing leaves your machine. You can change your mind either way, at any time, in Settings › Privacy.

A crash report contains:

  • the error, and where in Flint's own code it happened;
  • Flint's version, your operating system and your processor type; and
  • the last few hundred lines of Flint's own activity log.

It does not contain your project, your footage or any frame of it, your license key, your email address, or your file paths — your home folder is replaced with ~ before the report is even written to disk. Reports are held by a service we run ourselves.

If you send us feedback through Help › Send feedback, we receive what you typed and the email address you give us, if you give one. That field is optional and is used only to reply.

4. What Flint does not do

Stated plainly, because a notice that only lists what is collected leaves the rest to guesswork:

  • Flint contains no analytics and no usage tracking. It does not record which features you use, how long you use them, or what you do with them.
  • Your projects, media and exports are never uploaded, in whole or in part, by any feature.
  • Your file paths and file names are not sent. Flint's activity log, which does contain them, stays on your computer and is never transmitted.
  • Flint does not read your other files, your other applications, or anything outside the media you open in it.
  • There are no advertising, marketing or tracking services in the application.

The same is true of these pages. This website sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and loads nothing from a third party — no fonts, scripts or trackers served from anyone else's domain. Our host records the IP addresses of requests, as any web server does, and that is the whole of it.

5. Why we process it

To issue and verify licenses and to prevent one license being used more widely than it was sold for; to tell you when a new version is available; to fix crashes you have chosen to report; to answer your support messages and feedback; to take payment; and to comply with legal obligations or to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.

6. Who it is shared with

Four companies are involved in running Flint, each for one job:

  • Polar — sells licenses as merchant of record, and verifies license keys.
  • Cloudflare — hosts this website, the downloads, and the service that receives crash reports.
  • Hugging Face — hosts the speech-recognition model, if you use captions.
  • Microsoft — signs our Windows builds, so that Windows can confirm the download came from us. This involves no data about you.

Beyond those, information may be disclosed to our professional advisers; where required by law, regulation or legal process, or to protect rights, safety or property; and to a successor or acquirer in connection with a merger, acquisition, reorganization, financing or sale of assets.

We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it for third-party advertising.

7. International transfers

We are based in the United States, and information may be stored and processed there and in any other country where we or our service providers operate. Those countries may have data-protection laws different from the ones where you live. Where required, transfers out of the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland are made under an approved transfer mechanism.

8. Retention

We keep information for as long as it is needed for the purposes described above, and afterwards for as long as legal, accounting, tax, security or dispute-resolution requirements call for. Anything the Software stores on your own device stays there under your control until you remove it or uninstall.

9. Security

We take measures intended to protect information, but no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Legal bases

For people in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, we rely on: performance of a contract, for licensing, purchases and support; legitimate interests, in verifying licenses, preventing one license being used more widely than it was sold for, and telling you that a new version exists; consent, for sending crash reports, which is off until you give it and which you may withdraw at any time in Settings › Privacy; and compliance with legal obligations.

11. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how it is used, to receive it in a portable form, to withdraw consent where we relied on it, and to complain to your data protection authority. We do not charge for making a request and will not treat you differently for making one.

Write to [email protected]. We may need information sufficient to verify your identity, and we will respond within the period the applicable law allows. Some information is necessary to license and operate the Software, so a request to delete it may end your ability to use licensed functionality.

12. Children

Flint is not directed to children and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. You must be of the age required in your jurisdiction to enter into a binding contract in order to purchase a license.

13. Third-party services

The providers named in section 6 operate under their own terms and privacy notices. We do not control those services and are not responsible for their practices. Following a link out of this site, or a download link to a third party, takes you to a service governed by its own notice rather than this one.

14. Changes to this notice

We may update this notice as the product and our practices develop. The current version is the one on this page, and the date at the top shows when it last changed. Continuing to use Flint or this site after an update means you accept the revised notice.
